The (washing) Machine

Art toys have always been a big source of inspiration for me, and I love collecting them for years now. So I want to make one of my own? Below you explore the concept and the designs so far. It’s still a work in progress, but more updates will be added along the way.
So stay tuned.

Concept

What started out as a silly washing machine character with no pants, just socks, slowly evolved along the way. The word “machine” made me think of something more military inspired, and I noticed how close “washing machine” sounded to “war machine”.

Eventually I struck trough “washing”, leaving the name to read simply as: The Machine.

That idea sparked the direction for the design: adding missiles and a tougher battle-ready attitude, while still keeping things playful by letting him wear nothing but his socks.

Design changes

The original turret design felt a bit too simple, so I redesigned it into something more visually interesting while keeping it clean. With this change, I’m also thinking ahead about possible articulation and poseable parts.

Since washing machines have a reputation for making socks disappear, I gave the character two different socks. Which might explain the angry expression. Later, I added the missing sock stuck to the back as a playful detail.
